The Eyecare Smart Lamp 2 is a collaboration between Xiaomi, the smartphone company, and Philips, the global leader in lighting. As you can tell from the “2” suffix, this is second collaboration between the two companies to produce a smart lamp. Do the smart features really add anything substantial to a reading lamp or is it just a gimmick?
Philips have been producing the Eyecare line of lamps prior to this. These lamps are designed to give the user maximum eye comfort when reading or working. This was achieved by producing light that is diffused and evenly distributed across your workspace. The main cause of eye fatigue is uneven lighting and dazzle.
The Eyecare Smart Lamp 2 has the same features as the non-smart Eyecare lamps but it can now optimize the lighting it produces by collecting and processing light signals through the light sensor on a connected smartphone. Most modern smartphones have a light sensor that is normally used to adjust screen brightness. The Eyecare Smart Lamp 2 can now use a patented light calibration algorithm to optimize the light produced by the lamp.
Other improvements to this new version of the lamp include the ability to fold the lamp head up to 180 degrees. This gives you total freedom in adjusting the lighting position to fit your needs. It has a smart light sensor that when activated can automatically turn on the light when the room gets dark.
By collaborating with Philips, Xiaomi is able to include the smart lamp as part of its ever growing number of Xiaomi smart home devices. For example, you can program the smart lamp to switch on when the ambience is dark and when motion is detected by the Xiaomi smart motion detector. The lamp also offers a stepless dimming feature when controlled using the app.
