One of the bigger announcements from the recent E3 show was the availability of the PlayStation TV in the US. If you are a PlayStation fan you no doubt know what the PlayStation TV is all about and what it does so you can just skip all the way to the bottom and place your pre-order.
However, if you own a PlayStation 4 (or even if you don’t) but do not understand the significance of the PlayStation TV, we are here to enlighten you.
First of all, the PlayStation TV has been selling as the PS Vita TV in Japan and parts of Asia so it is not exactly brand new. In a nutshell, the PlayStation TV is a non-portable version of the PlayStation Vita, i.e. it has no screen, battery or game buttons. Therefore, it requires a TV and DualShock 3 or 4 controllers for playing.
The PlayStation TV is actually 3 devices in 1. Since it is essentially a PlayStation Vita, you can buy and download PS Vita games online and play them on your TV. Over 100 Vita games are currently available for download. And if you like classic games, there are also various digital PlayStation Portable, PlayStation, and PC Engine titles available for download as well.
Secondly, the PlayStation TV is able to purchase and stream original PlayStation, PlayStation 2 and PlayStation 3 games via Sony’s PlayStation Now video game streaming service. Think of it as Netflix but for video games.
Last but not least and probably the most important feature for PlayStation 4 owners, the PlayStation TV allows you to remotely connect to your PlayStation 4 and play from any TV in your home. The PlayStation Vita has a similar function but unlike the Vita, you can use a DualShock 4 controller with all the buttons and the touchpad plus the PlayStation TV supports multiple players. If the living room TV is occupied, just continue playing on another TV via the PlayStation TV.
Okay, now that you are enlightened, please proceed to place your pre-order.
