The Cable TV Cord Cutter
The Roku 3500R Streaming Stick is Roku’s new stick form factor Roku player for 2014. This is not Roku’s first stick format player but the new Roku 3500R Streaming Stick has generated a lot of excitement and we will tell you why.
Roku players are media players that allow streaming of content from the internet. Roku users have access to more than 1000 internet video and music channels that can all be viewed in glorious HD on a big screen TV. Most if not all the popular content like Netflix, YouTube, Hulu Plus, HBO Go and Amazon Instant Video are all accessible. While you may need a paid subscription for some of the channels, many of them are free.
The original Roku Streaming Stick packed all the features of a Roku box into a stick form factor that is slightly larger than a USB flash drive. However, the original stick required an MHL (Mobile High-Definition Link) equipped TV to work with. The MHL port is similar to a HDMI port but it also simultaneously supplies power to the connected device. While many newer TV models do support MHL, the original Roku stick’s reliance on MHL severely limited its reach. The new Roku 3500R Streaming Stick does away with the MHL requirement and can be used with any normal HDMI equipped TV.
The other big selling point for the new Roku 3500R Streaming Stick is that Roku has dropped its price by about half to only $50 and it comes pre-packaged with a remote. . The original Roku stick launched at $99. The huge drop in price is no doubt influenced by the $35 Google Chromecast. While the Roku stick does cost more than the Chromecast, Roku offers much more content. The Chromecast will take quite a bit of time before it catches up. Furthermore, the Chromecast does not come with a remote.
