The Sonos Roam is Sonos’ second attempt at a portable speaker after the Sonos Move. While the Sonos Move is one of the better sounding portable speakers, it is severely lacking in the portability department. From the specifications, Sonos definitely got the portability right this time, with its much smaller size and weighing in at just under 1 pound. However, portable Bluetooth speakers are like the proverbial dime a dozen, with all kinds of options for the discerning buyer. Does the Sonos Roam has what it takes to demand our attention?
The Sonos Roam is not just a simple portable wireless speaker. It is Sonos’ smallest and lightest speaker. It is also Sonos’ cheapest speaker at $170. It is built for the outdoors with IP67 rating and drop resistant. It is waterproof up to 3 feet for 30 minutes. As a portable speaker, it definitely checks all the right boxes.
However, the Sonos Roam is not just a portable speaker with the Sonos brand. Unlike most Bluetooth speakers, it also has WiFi connectivity. That means that it works just like any Sonos speaker and can be integrated into the Sonos ecosystem. At home, the Roam can be an extra multi-room speaker or even one-half of a pair of wireless stereo speakers. Bring it out with you and it behaves like any other wireless speaker by pairing with your phone via Bluetooth.
To make it easier to transform the Roam from a portable speaker to a home speaker, it has built-in wireless Qi charging. Just place it on a charging pad when you get home and it works like a wired speaker while topping up the battery for your next outdoor excursion.
If you are a current Sonos user, the Sonos Roam is almost a no-brainer if you plan to add a portable speaker. For non-users, its low price might just be the incentive needed to make them new Sonos users.

Last but not least, the Roam has built in Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant support. Use it to play music, check the news, and control your smart home devices.
Sonos speakers come with a premium price tag and the Roam is no different even though it is the cheapest speaker from Sonos. However, with all the extra features and functions that it comes with, it makes the higher price tag much easier to swallow.
